Michelin-starred restaurants near golf courses

7 min read

A two-star restaurant with only five tables, a 15-metre window over the Merano basin and, half an hour away by car, a nine-hole course beneath a castle. Five starred tables, all inside a hotel with a course within reach of a tee time.

In golf, dinner is half of the day. Here are five Michelin Guide restaurants inside a hotel, with golf courses within reach for a day's play. The stars change every year, so it is always worth checking the current edition of the guide.

A reminder about the stars: one star signals cooking of great quality, two signal excellent cooking worth a detour. For golfers, the real constraint is something else: three of these starred restaurants serve dinner only from Tuesday to Saturday, and some close in winter. Book dinner before the tee time, not after.

Castel fine dining, Tirolo: two stars and five tables

The gourmet restaurant of the Hotel Castel has two stars in the 2026 Michelin Guide and only five tables, overlooking Merano through a 15-metre window. Chef Gerhard Wieser works with char and trout from nearby farms and with South Tyrolean Wagyu. Dinner is served from Tuesday to Saturday, with arrival between 7 and 7.30 pm; it closes in winter (the 2025-26 break ran from 8 November to 15 April).

For golf it is the best-organised base: the staff book tee times, and the stay includes the South Tyrol Golfcard with a 20% discount on green fees at the nine courses of the province. The reference round is the Passeier.Meran (18 holes, par 71, 5,791 metres, undated list price of 106 euros) or the Golf Club Lana, nine holes beneath Brandis Castle (2026 list price: 50 euros for 9 holes, 90 for 18).

Campo del Drago, Montalcino: private golf and Brunello

At Castiglion del Bosco, in the Val d'Orcia, the Campo del Drago has two stars (Michelin Guide Italia 2026, the second since 2025 according to the hotel). Chef Matteo Temperini uses plenty of vegetables from the estate's garden, and the wine list runs to more than 700 labels. Dinner is served from Tuesday to Saturday.

The golf is the most singular of this itinerary: The Club at Castiglion del Bosco is a private club, with 18 holes by Tom Weiskopf and a nineteenth hole, the "Brunello Hole", a short par 3 where whoever wants to settle the match plays for a magnum of Brunello. You play as a member, by invitation or, as a guest of the hotel, by booking the tee time in advance; the club does not publish a price list.

Prezioso, Merano: one star among the roses

The Prezioso at Castel Fragsburg, a hunting lodge from 1624 above Merano, has one star in the 2026 Michelin Guide. Chef Egon Heiss serves a single tasting menu of mountain ingredients, with vegetables from a 2,000 m² garden; dinner is served from Tuesday to Saturday, from 7 to 9 pm, in a glass loggia covered in roses. The hotel has no golf packages or dedicated services, but points to Val Passiria and Lana about half an hour away by car, Petersberg about an hour away (Golf Club Petersberg) and San Vigilio Siusi an hour and a half away.

Gourmetstube 1897, San Martino in Passiria: the youngest star

At the Quellenhof Passeier the Gourmetstube 1897 received its first Michelin star on 19 November 2025, confirmed in the 2026 guide. Chef Michael Mayr, in the kitchen since 2017, builds the "Psaier meets the World" menu on products of the valley, with much of the fish coming from the farm at San Leonardo. The cellar holds about 1,200 labels.

Here the golf is practically at home: the resort is a founding member of Golf Club Passeier Meran, five minutes away by car, and reserves for its guests a green fee of 72 euros instead of the roughly 105 on the list. There are also four holes of its own and a 20-bay practice range.

Il Fagiano, Gardone Riviera: a star on Lake Garda

The Grand Hotel Fasano, a former imperial hunting lodge from 1888, houses Il Fagiano by chef Maurizio Bufi, which holds one Michelin star (according to the Michelin Guide the cooking is creative and contemporary, with echoes of the chef's native Apulia). The hotel has no course or golf packages: it points to three courses on the Brescia shore. Bogliaco, opened in 1912 and presented by the hotel as the third oldest course in Italy; Gardagolf, 27 holes that hosted the men's Italian Open in 1997 and 2003; Arzaga, 27 holes by Jack Nicklaus II and Gary Player.

A note on Turin and other tables

The restaurant of the Circolo Golf Torino at La Mandria is run by La Credenza, a starred restaurant in San Maurizio Canavese, but access is reserved for members, except for special events. In Apulia there is Due Camini at Borgo Egnazia, which according to the hotel held a star every year from 2019 to 2024: for the 2026 edition, check the guide.

How to pair golf and a starred dinner

  1. Book dinner first. Tables are few (five at the Castel) and opening days limited: Tuesday to Saturday at the Castel, at the Prezioso and at the Campo del Drago.
  2. Play in the afternoon. The Passeier offers a "sunset" rate from 64 euros after 3 pm (undated list price), from April to November.
  3. Check the season. The Castel is closed in winter; Val Passiria opens from March to November.
  4. Dress. At the Quellenhof the hotel asks for elegant dress in the evening; on the course, respect the club's dress code.
