After the 18th green at Castiglion del Bosco there is one more hole to play: the 'Brunello Hole', a short match-play par 3 with a magnum of Brunello at stake. It caps a Tom Weiskopf course that the club calls Italy's only private golf club, and staying at the Rosewood is one of the few ways in for non-members.

Golf at Castiglion del Bosco: Tom Weiskopf's private course
The Club at Castiglion del Bosco is a private members' club, joined by invitation, and members can bring introduced guests. The exception is hotel guests, who can play the 18 holes as long as they book ahead. Non-members who are not staying can apply for unaccompanied play, subject to the club's approval.
The course is by Tom Weiskopf and is laid over the hills and valleys of the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape since 2004. Weiskopf said it 'looks as if it has been here 100 years'. The club doesn't publish par or yardage; what it does highlight is the 19th, the 'Brunello Hole', and two in-house events, the Weiskopf Invitational and the President's Cup.

Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco: a medieval borgo in Montalcino
The estate runs to 5,000 acres around a medieval borgo. The castle dates from around 1100, and its stone walls were raised in the early 13th century by the Cacciaconti di Trequanda. Massimo Ferragamo bought the property in 2003 and relaunched the winery; in 2022 it passed to an international family office.
The hotel has 42 suites in the borgo and 11 villas in 17th- and 18th-century farmhouses. Villa Stabbi, for one, has six bedrooms and comes with a 4x4 for guests to use. The Michelin Guide awards the hotel three Keys.
Timings differ between suites and villas: suite check-in is from 3pm with check-out at noon, while villa guests arrive from 4pm and leave by 10am. Cribs are free, subject to availability, and the restaurants have children's menus.
Campo del Drago, Brunello and spa at Castiglion del Bosco
The fine-dining room is Campo del Drago, with two Michelin stars. Chef Matteo Temperini offers what the Guide calls a personal, creative reading of regional cooking, built on vegetables from the estate garden, with a list of more than 700 wines. It serves dinner Tuesday to Saturday. For something simpler there is Osteria La Canonica, a Tuscan trattoria inside the borgo, next to the cooking school of the same name.
Wine here is also history: Castiglion del Bosco was one of the 25 founding members of the Brunello di Montalcino consortium in 1967, and today's two-level cellar, with a capacity of 3,000 hectolitres, was built in 2004. The Spa opens daily from 10am to 7pm, using ingredients from a historic Florentine apothecary and Tuscan olive oil.
In autumn the Members' Cellar hosts Dinner with Brunello evenings; the hotel's published dates are 26 October and 2, 9, 24 and 30 November.
Did you know? Castiglion del Bosco
- A Lorenzetti in the fields: in 1345 Pietro Lorenzetti painted an Annunciation with six saints in the church of San Michele Arcangelo, about a mile from the borgo. It lay under plaster until 1876.
- Named decades later: it was art historian Cesare Brandi who, in 1930, attributed the fresco to Lorenzetti.
- 850,000 bottles: that, according to the winery, was the combined output of the 25 founders of the Brunello consortium in 1967.
