Castel Fragsburg

Castel Fragsburg has no course of its own and sells no golf packages; it works as a quiet base for golfers playing around Merano. On its golf page the hotel names the Passeier golf club (18 holes) and Golf Club Lana (9 holes) as the closest options, each about half an hour by car.

For a longer day out, the same page suggests Petersberg, 18 holes about an hour away, and San Vigilio Siusi, an hour and a half away below the Dolomites. The hotel points out that golf has been played in South Tyrol for more than a hundred years, and that the mild climate of the Merano basin stretches the season.

The hotel does not list any golf services such as tee-time booking, green-fee discounts or shuttles, so plan on booking directly with the clubs and driving yourself.

The house was built in 1624 as a hunting lodge for the local nobility. In 1954 it passed to the Ortner family, and Alexander Ortner and his sons, the third and fourth generations, run it today. Much of the furniture was collected by the family over sixty years.

The 20 suites sit on a private hill inside a 50,000 m² garden. Rates start at €490 per room for the Deluxe Double Room, with the Breakfast Royale included, and climb to €1,140 for the Soul Luxury Suite; the Adlerhorst tower suite has an 18 m² rooftop terrace. The hotel puts Bolzano airport about 30 minutes away and Innsbruck and Verona about 90 minutes, and arranges private transfers from Merano and Bolzano stations. Parking is free and dogs are welcome.

Prezioso holds one star in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide. Chef Egon Heiss cooks a single seasonal tasting menu built on mountain produce: vegetables come from a 2,000 m² garden, most of the rest from farmers in the surrounding valleys. It opens Tuesday to Saturday, 7 to 9 pm, in a glass loggia hung with climbing roses or out on the wooden terrace.

Half-board guests eat in the Orangerie, where dinner runs to five courses.

The Castellum Natura Healing Spa draws on old herbal medicine and the teachings of alchemy, and the hotel calls it "the first of its kind in the world". Its team makes the tinctures and balms in-house and has dropped packaged cosmetics altogether; natural-healing expert Renate De Mario Gamper is in charge.

Outside is a heated 8 × 13 m pool framed by roses and wisteria. Inside are a Finnish sauna at up to 100 °C, a herbal bio sauna, a steam room and an infrared cabin, all looking out over the Texel Group Nature Park.

• Pluto the ibex lived in the castle garden and, as the family tells it, sired young with a goat; his likeness still keeps watch on the facade.
• Two buildings reunited: by buying Castel Fragsburg Paternum, the 14th-century castle on the crag, the Ortners brought back together two buildings that once belonged to each other.
• A garden with a social mission: the Fragsburg Soul Garden is farmed with Merano's youth service, and its herbs end up in the spa's tinctures.
• Valley timber: in 2015 the second and third floors of the old house were rebuilt in local wood, and heating now comes from wood pellets and solar panels.
• Smokers get two spots: the porch swings by the entrance and the rose garden next to the terrace.
