Tuscany sets its golf among hills, coast and history. At Ugolino, in Florence, on 1 May 1983 Severiano Ballesteros asked the crowd for silence and holed a nine-iron from off the green at the Italian Open; a plaque still marks the spot.
At Prato, Arnold Palmer designed the Pavoniere with two fairways on islands; at Tirrenia, the Cosmopolitan clubhouse is the work of Aldo Rossi. In the hills above Vinci, according to the tourist board, Bellosguardo dedicates each hole to Leonardo, and on the island of Elba the Acquabona has been played since 1971.
