The Golf Club Toscana course at Il Pelagone: 18 holes by Keith Preston
The course, at Il Pelagone in Gavorrano, is an 18-hole championship course, par 71: 36 on the front nine and 35 on the back, with five par 3s and four par 5s. It was designed by Keith Preston and opened in 1999. According to the resort, in 2003 it was included among the ten best new golf courses and it meets international standards.
It is not a long layout: from the yellow tees it measures 5,542 metres (4,804 from the reds, for women), but accuracy counts for more than power. Water comes into play on many holes, the greens have pronounced slopes that are hard to read, and rough and out of bounds are positioned so that club selection matters from the tee.
Among the holes to remember: the 9th, a 496-metre par 5 and first on the stroke index, the 11th, a par 3 of only 94 metres, and the 18th, a 449-metre par 5, from which you can see the island of Elba and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The course has six sets of tees, from the white championship tee (course rating 71.4, slope 131) to those for beginners, recommended up to handicap 36.
Playing at Golf Club Toscana as a guest
The course is playable all year and also welcomes outside players. The 2026 price list divides the year into three seasons: for non-hotel guests 18 holes cost 70 euros from November to March, 80 in April, May, June and October and 90 from July to September; nine holes 45, 45 and 50 euros. Hotel guests pay 10 euros less. For juniors the green fee is 30 euros (35 in high season), and in high season there is a twilight rate of 50 euros from 4 pm.
A golf cart costs 40 euros for 18 holes and 25 for nine; an electric trolley 15 euros and a manual one 5. Tee times are booked online; packages of 5 or 10 green fees, groups and competitions go through the office (+39 0566 820471), which is also the place to ask about fitness to play and dress code, defined at check-in.
The club: Toptracer range, academy and competitions
The practice range is about 300 metres long and more than 100 wide, with 24 grass bays and seven covered Toptracer bays with eight screens, one for left-handers. According to the resort it is the only Toptracer range in Tuscany and it is open to everyone, not just hotel guests, seven days a week: 24 balls cost 2 euros, with no time limit. The technology measures ball speed, launch angle and carry, and lets you play virtual courses.
For the short game there are two putting greens, a green for chipping and pitching and a practice bunker. The resort also has a Golf Academy.
The course has hosted the Nick Faldo Series Italy Championship and other national and international events. For those who want a change, the club organises minivan trips to the nearby courses of Punta Ala, Riva Toscana, Terme di Saturnia and Argentario.
