Facts checked on 18/10/2026

At Riva Toscana a cork oak stands in the middle of the 11th fairway, and the golfer has to decide whether to play over it or under it. It is one of the touches of a Giulio Cavalsani course that winds through 2,500 centuries-old olive trees and small lakes above Follonica, in the Maremma, with the sea and the Tuscan archipelago in view from 12 holes.

The Riva Toscana Golf Resort course: 18 holes between olive trees and sea

The design is by Giulio Cavalsani: an 18-hole par 72 that measures about 6,300 metres from the yellow tees and that the resort describes as a championship course whose layout is “never the same or repetitive”. Bermuda fairways often framed by rows of olive trees, about 2,500 centuries-old plants, and small lakes inhabited by wildlife; the resort maintains the course with Paspalum grass and methods it declares 100% natural. From 12 holes you can see the Gulf of Follonica, the island of Elba and the Tuscan archipelago.

The sequence alternates dogleg par 4s, treacherous par 3s and long par 5s, uphill or downhill. It opens with a long par 4 with a dogleg to the left, water on the right and out of bounds on the left. Hole 4, an uphill par 5 of over 500 metres, is stroke index 1. Hole 11 has the cork oak planted in the middle of the fairway. Hole 13 is a par 3 of only 125 metres but with the widest view of the archipelago, and behind the green lies a patch of rough where finding the ball is almost impossible. At hole 17 the approach to the green is downhill with water on three sides; the round ends with a 180-metre par 3 that is almost always played into the wind.

Playing at Riva Toscana Golf Club as a guest

The course is open to visitors. In the 2026 price list the green fee for 18 holes is €55 in low season (7 January to 27 March and 3 November to 23 December), €70 in mid season and €85 in high season, from 6 June to 5 October. For 9 holes the fees are €35, €45 and €55. Resort guests and FIG Toscana members pay reduced rates (€50, €60 and €75 for 18 holes), and there are prices for groups of more than 12 people and books of 10 green fees.

You can rent golf carts (€45 for 18 holes), electric trolleys (€25) and a set of Callaway irons (€40). The clubhouse is open from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm in summer and until 4:30 pm in winter; the golf office, combined with the hotel reception, books tee times (+39 0566 028036, [email protected]).

The club: clubhouse, academy and resort

The clubhouse brings together reception, changing rooms, the “The 19th Hole” bar, the pro shop, with the estate’s extra virgin olive oil and wine, and the Paspalum restaurant, run by chef Nicola, with a menu that changes every two months and focuses on fresh fish and homemade pasta. The resort also has a spa, with Finnish sauna, Turkish bath and a Zero Body lounger, and two-level swimming pools with a view of Elba.

For practice there is a 260-metre driving range with 30 grass bays and 10 covered ones, plus two pitching greens and a putting green. The golf academy is run by the PGAI pro Alessandro Resseguier, with individual lessons, group clinics, courses for beginners and a club for juniors.

The course hosts competitions all year round: on 17 June 2026 it was the turn of Il Grande Golf dei Giornalisti, and on 22 June 2025 the III Vedere lontano Cup was played.

Curiosities about Riva Toscana Golf Resort

  • A course without chemicals: the resort declares 100% natural management, with Paspalum grass and a “chemical free” environment.
  • Twelve holes with a view: the sea and the Tuscan archipelago can be seen from 12 of the 18 holes.
  • The cork oak on hole 11: a lone tree in the middle of the fairway forces you to choose whether to play over or under its crown.
  • A 125-metre par 3: hole 13 is very short, but anyone who goes long ends up in a patch of rough behind the green from which recovering the ball is almost impossible.
  • The golf oil: the pro shop sells the extra virgin olive oil made from the estate’s olive trees.
