Facts checked on 18/10/2026

According to the story the club tells of itself, it was Italo Balbo who named Punta Ala, looking at a golden beach shaped like a seagull's wing. On the back of that hill, in the spring of 1964, the Golf Club was born: today 18 holes, par 72, 6,168 metres in the Maremma scrub, with the sea in the background.

The course at Golf Club Punta Ala: par 72 in the Maremma scrub

The course runs for 6,168 metres with par 72, in a scenic area with sea views. The undulations of the terrain are, the club writes, gentle and natural, and the fairways cross the Maremma scrub: dense evergreen vegetation, stone and maritime pines, cork oaks, centuries-old holm oaks, oaks and strawberry-tree bushes, which in turn become natural hazards for play.

The club describes itself as one of the most beautiful courses in Tuscany and Italy. Punta Ala lies at the tip of a promontory that marks the southern edge of the Gulf of Follonica, in the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia, in the province of Grosseto, and the course is a few kilometres from both Castiglione and Follonica.

The story of the name is part of the place's identity: the club's presentation traces it back to Italo Balbo, who saw the beach of fine sand and the hill of Mediterranean scrub and pine woods sloping down to the sea, and called it Punta Ala for its resemblance to the outstretched wing of a seagull.

Sporting activity runs all year round, with an intense programme of competitions especially in summer. The 2026 price list published on the website distinguishes four seasons for the daily green fee (Italians and foreigners): 85 euros in low season (from 7 January to 27 March and from 2 November to 23 December), 95 in mid season, 105 in high season (from 1 May to 31 July and from 1 September to 4 October) and 120 in August. 9 holes cost from 45 to 75 euros.

There are significant discounts for those staying at the club's resort, with the daily fee from 50 to 85 euros; members of Tuscan clubs pay from 60 to 105 euros, juniors from 40 to 65. Entry to the practice ground costs 16 euros (10 per lesson). The website does not state the required handicap or the closing day; for details call 0564 922121.

The club: from 1964 to the new resort

The A.S.D. Golf Club Punta Ala began activity in the spring of 1964, is affiliated to the Italian Golf Federation (no. 033) and recognised by CONI. The club organises competitions throughout the year and golf clinics with the federation teacher.

From spring 2026 the club presents itself as Punta Ala Golf & Wellness Resort: 30 rooms with a sea-view terrace, Samsara Wellness and the Infinity Sky Pool, with cuisine based on fish and local produce. The club describes it as the step from holiday to “experience” built around golf and the Maremma, along the thread of a sixty-year history.
