The nickname “Blue Monster” comes from the water: designer Thomas C. Himmel filled the course at Riva di Sotto, between Appiano and Terlano, with water hazards, “an unusual amount of water”, as the club puts it. The nine-hole layout, surrounded by a sea of apple trees, has the hotel The Lodge and the restaurant The Grill House at the clubhouse.

The Blue Monster course: nine water holes among the apple trees
The course has nine holes and can also be played as 18. It was designed by Thomas C. Himmel, who founded his firm in 1991 and made water his signature: the club speaks of “an unusual amount of water” and of several artificial lakes, across a green surface of more than 10,000 square metres. According to the South Tyrol tourist board, there are eight lakes.
The nickname “The Blue Monster” comes precisely from the large expanses of water. All around are apple trees as far as the eye can see, the mountains and, from the course, a view of Hocheppan Castle. Several tees per hole let players match the challenge to their level. The club boasts a BVGA 4-star Superior rating for course maintenance, service and facilities.
Playing the Blue Monster as a guest
The price list published on the website, with no year given, sets the green fee at €60 for nine holes and €100 for 18. Under-18s get 50% off; guests of the hotels partnering in the Golf In programme get 20% off 18 holes, while those of premium partners get 20% off nine holes and 30% off 18.
An electric golf cart costs €30 for nine holes and €40 for 18, a trolley €6 and rental clubs €50. The chipping and putting area costs €15. Season, required handicap and closing day vary or do not appear in the sources consulted: before setting out, check the website or write to [email protected].
The club: hotel, restaurant and golf school
The Blue Monster is part of the Golf & Country complex, which includes The Lodge Sport Hotel, the restaurant The Grill House, a gym, a spa, a simulator and a training centre. The golf school counts among its instructors Andreas Lanthaler, a member of the PGA of Germany, and Dimitri Cavazzana, who played on the Alps Tour and other circuits between 2020 and 2025.
For beginners there is a four-hole practice course, about 4 kilometres away, near Schloss Freudenstein.
