Private villa holidays near a golf course: where to find them

6 min read

Villa Stabbi, at Castiglion del Bosco, has six bedrooms and comes with an off-road vehicle for guests to use. It is one of the villas that some of Italy's grand hotels offer alongside their rooms: here is which ones, and with which golf course.

Anyone looking for a holiday "in a villa" with golf close at hand has two options. The first is to rent a house through an agency or a private owner. The second is to choose a luxury hotel that offers a number of private villas alongside its rooms, with a pool, a garden and, in many cases, butler service: a model that gives you the privacy of a home and the services of a resort.

There are nine hotels with villas on their own grounds and a reference golf course, listed by region. Prices vary by season and by package and must be requested from the property.

Tuscany: Castiglion del Bosco

The hotel has 42 suites in the village and 11 villas created from 17th- and 18th-century farmhouses; Villa Stabbi, with six bedrooms, comes with an off-road vehicle for guests to use. Times differ between suites and villas: in the villas, arrival is from 4 pm and departure by 10 am. The Tom Weiskopf course, in the Val d'Orcia, is, according to the club, the only private golf club in Italy, and guests staying at the Rosewood are among the few non-members admitted: the reference course is Castiglion del Bosco.

Sicily: Verdura Resort

At the Verdura Resort in Sciacca, alongside the 203 rooms there are 20 private villas with three or four bedrooms. The resort has 45 holes designed by Kyle Phillips, and it is at the Verdura Golf Club that the Golf Inclusive Offer includes two green fees per room per night. Before booking, it is worth asking whether the package also applies to the villas, because the resort does not specify.

Sardinia: Pitrizza, Romazzino, Forte Village

On the Costa Smeralda, two hotels with villas share the same golf reference, the Pevero Golf Club, opened in 1972 and designed by Robert Trent Jones. The Hotel Pitrizza, designed by Luigi Vietti in 1963, has 49 rooms and 16 villas with two to three bedrooms, most of them with a private pool by the sea. Romazzino, run by Belmond since 2024, has six villas with a pool, with three or five bedrooms, which include transfers, breakfast and a butler; the five three-bedroom villas are named after places on the coast: Marinella, Capriccioli, Principe, Caprera and Pevero. Neither hotel has a course of its own.

To the south, at Forte Village in Pula there are 13 villas and 40 suites next to eight hotels, in 123 acres of gardens. The golf is at Is Molas, 27 holes, three courses, host of four Italian Opens: according to the resort, access is reserved for guests of the five- and four-star hotels and of the villas.

Apulia: Borgo Egnazia

From Borgo Egnazia you can see the rooftops from the clubhouse of San Domenico Golf, an 18-hole par 72 designed by Andy Haggar. The 184 rooms are divided among La Corte, Il Borgo and Le Case, villas with a private pool: the five villas of Le Case, of 250 m² each, are called Casa Bella, Deliziosa, Stupenda, Magnifica and Meravigliosa. The hotel does not publish a golf package: tee times must be requested at the time of booking.

Lombardy, Veneto and South Tyrol

In Cernobbio, Villa d'Este has four private villas on its estate, rented separately; the reference course is the Montorfano club, bought back by the hotel in 2024. On Lake Garda, Quellenhof Lazise offers private villas with a pool, sauna and whirlpool: the hotel has no course of its own but lists twelve courses within an hour and twenty minutes. In the Val Passiria, the Quellenhof See Lodge, for guests aged 14 and over, has See-Villen with a private pool and Finnish sauna; the largest, the Rooftop-Villa, measures 350 m² and sleeps up to eight. Guests play on the resort's four-hole course, with a reduced green fee of 72 euros for the 18 holes at the other courses in the area.

What to ask before booking a villa

  • Included services: butler, transfers and breakfast vary from hotel to hotel.
  • Golf: whether the discounted green fee or the packages also apply to the villas.
  • Times: at Castiglion del Bosco, for example, villa arrival is from 4 pm and departure by 10 am.
  • The course: not every hotel has its own golf course; some, such as Pitrizza and Romazzino, point to Pevero without offering shuttles or dedicated discounts.
