The course at Pevero Golf Club: 18 holes by Robert Trent Jones

The club opened in 1972 on 60 hectares of the Costa Smeralda. The design is by Robert Trent Jones, who according to the club designed more than 500 courses in 34 countries. The result is a par 72 of 6,107 metres, in a wind-swept landscape of eroded rocks and natural ponds, scented with juniper and myrtle.

The difficulty, the club says, comes from the mistral: the north-westerly winds make every shot uncertain. From the 4th hole you can see the snow-capped peaks of Corsica and the island of Caprera; the 16th hole is a tribute to James Bond, in memory of 1962, the year the saga debuted and the Costa Smeralda began.

The course record, reported on the website, is 66 strokes by the amateur John Saxon Mills, in 1977. Golf Magazine, the club recalls, ranked it among the 50 best courses in the world.

The 18-hole green fee costs 120 euros from January to 26 April and from 26 October to December, 140 from 27 April to 21 June and from 14 September to 25 October, 160 from 22 June to 19 July and from 17 August to 13 September, 180 from 20 July to 16 August. Nine holes range from 80 to 110 euros. Juniors born after 1 January 2008 pay half.

Access is reserved for those with a card from a recognised federation and a maximum handicap of 54. The buggy with GPS costs 60 euros for 18 holes, the electric trolley 30 euros, while the hand trolley is free; premium clubs can be rented for 65-70 euros. Every player must have their own bag, children under 6 may not enter the course, and driving the buggy requires being 18 and holding a licence.

The dress code bans jeans and T-shirts: tailored Bermuda shorts and collared polo shirts are worn. The course opens every day from 8 am to 7:30 pm; cancellations with less than 48 hours' notice cost 100%.

The club: history, tournaments and facilities

Pevero grew out of a project overseen by Robert O'Donnell, with the clubhouse designed by Riccardo Bonicatti. Its most famous event is the 1978 Italian Open: the South African Dale Hayes won over the Englishman Tommy Horton, with 293 strokes.

The calendar also recalls the Italian International Amateurs and the International Ladies Championship of 1981 and the PGA of Europe Individual Championship in 1999, 2001 and 2002, as well as many finals of amateur circuits.

The practice range has 20 outdoor bays and 5 covered ones with Toptracer, plus putting, pitching and a bunker area. The clubhouse offers a restaurant overlooking the course and a panoramic terrace with a swimming pool.
