The first Italian Open played at Is Molas, in 1976, was won by Baldovino Dassù: fifty years on, he is the one who walks you through the course hole by hole on the club's website. The championship course of southern Sardinia, opened in 1975, has hosted the Open four times.

The course at Circolo Golf Is Molas: 18 championship holes and the 9-hole Giallo
The main 18 holes, made up of the White and Red courses, measure 6,383 metres for a par 72. They were laid out by Cotton, Pennink & Partners to a design by Piero Mancinelli, and a year after opening they were already hosting the first Italian Open.
Dassù's guide names the 5th as the most punishing hole: stroke index 1, bushes on both sides, out of bounds on the left, a lake, a deep bunker and a lone tree guarding a “canyon” with a hidden stream. On the 9th the driver stays in the bag because of a lake 230 metres from the tee, and the second shot must carry 70 metres of water. The 10th is a par 3 over the lake, with two horseshoe bunkers; the 13th is the “road hole”, with the fairway narrowed to little more than 25 metres between the Sahara bunker and the water.
The 9-hole Giallo has been reseeded with Bermuda grass, which copes better with heat, and has been playable again since 31 December 2025. The irrigation system is also being replaced, already completed on 18 holes, to cut water consumption by at least 30%.
Playing at Circolo Golf Is Molas as a guest
Tee times are booked online. The 2026 price list has four bands: for 18 holes on weekdays you pay 80 euros in low season (7 January to 31 March and November), 90 in mid season, 110 in high season and 135 in August; at weekends from 95 to 135 euros. Nine holes cost from 50 to 70 euros, and under-18s pay 40 euros for 18 holes on weekdays. Those short of time can book the back nine of the Red course directly, subject to availability.
A set of rental clubs costs 50 euros for 18 holes, a golf cart from 50 to 60, an electric trolley from 20 to 25 euros a day. The club publishes rates for every month, and the resort speaks of days that in December and January often exceed 15 degrees.
The club: clubhouse, academy and driving range
The clubhouse reception is open from 8 am to 6 pm with multilingual staff. The Is Molas Golf Academy works with TrackMan and video analysis, and offers individual lessons, clinics and a Golf Camp for juniors; the driving range costs 15 euros, 25 with equipment. Members can take annual memberships covering the 27 holes, with reciprocal agreements with other clubs. After the round you eat at 19 Bistrot, which looks out over both the course and the sea.
Fun facts about Circolo Golf Is Molas
- A green shaped like Africa. On the 14th the green is almost surrounded by water and traces the African continent: Dassù advises going over Cape Town, because west of Nigeria you need “a watchmaker's precision”.
- The Sardinian wall. The 15th, the “wall hole”, is the longest par 5: out of bounds begins beyond a dry-stone wall.
- The Beardies. On the 16th the tee shot has to deal with the “Beardies” of Is Molas.
- African grass for the heat. The 9-hole Giallo has been reseeded in Bermuda, a variety that stands up better to the Sardinian summer.
