Hotel Pitrizza

Pitrizza has no course and no golf package. Among the activities it suggests, the hotel points guests to Pevero Golf Club, whose fairways wind through Sardinian mountains and Mediterranean scrub, past natural lakes and ponds. To be clear about it: the hotel lists no shuttle, discount or dedicated booking service, and the stay-and-play rate Pevero sells is tied to other hotels in the area.

The course opened in 1972 to a design by Robert Trent Jones and covers 60 hectares between the Gulf of Pevero and Cala di Volpe bay. The club notes that Golf Magazine once ranked it among the 50 best courses in the world. Tee times are booked online; for practice there is a Toptracer Range, the Pevero Golf Academy teaches juniors and children as well as adults, and carts, trolleys and bags can be hired.

The 49 rooms and suites face either the garden or the sea, and each has a balcony, terrace or patch of garden. They range from Classic rooms to Deluxe Pool Suites, by way of the Roccia Pool Suite and a two-bedroom Duplex Sea Suite. There are also 16 villas of two or three bedrooms, most with a private pool looking out to sea.

The hotel's signature is its saltwater pool, shaped among granite boulders and open from 8am to 7pm. Below it lies the private beach, with drinks and light dishes served there and by the pool.

Meals are at The Grill, which overlooks the pool and cooks with regional produce for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Bar Pitrizza, on the terrace, pours cocktails and serves light plates until half past midnight.

The Wellness Centre offers face and body treatments from 10am to 8pm, and the gym is open around the clock, with personal trainers available on request, even in your room or villa. There is a tennis court and a padel court, bookable until late, plus water sports including jet ski, windsurfing, seabob and kayak. The Kids' Club takes children aged 3 to 12, daily from 10am to 6:30pm.

For runners and cyclists, the concierge recommends the Pevero hill trail and the Monte Moro path, and can arrange horse rides along the beach from sunrise to sunset; among nearby beaches it singles out Spiaggia del Principe and Liscia Ruja, with their pink granite rocks.

• A new name ahead: the hotel is managed by LVMH's Cheval Blanc brand; according to TTG Media, after renovation it is set to become Cheval Blanc Pitrizza, Costa Smeralda.
• Late-night room service: in-room dining runs until 3:30am.
• Sailing to Corsica: the concierge arranges sailing trips to the La Maddalena islands or across to Bonifacio.
• Six thousand years next door: the Arzachena Archaeological Park preserves prehistoric tombs and necropolises.
