Romantik Hotel Turm

In the bar of a 13th-century tower in Völs am Schlern hangs a genuine Picasso, one of about 2,000 paintings and prints collected by the current owner's father. For golfers, though, the number that matters is five: the minutes the hotel says it takes to reach Golf St. Vigil Seis.

Golf at Hotel Turm: St. Vigil Seis and its 15th hole

The home course is Golf St. Vigil Seis, on the Seiser Alm plateau: 18 holes, par 69, at 850 metres, open from April to November, and Hotel Turm is on the club's list of partner hotels. The hole to remember is the 15th, a par 3 the club calls one of the steepest drops of any par 3 in Europe.

Guests get 20% off the green fee and guaranteed tee times that can be booked well ahead, before leaving home. From 3 May to 25 October 2026 the hotel sells three golf breaks of three to seven nights, one of them combining golf with gourmet dining and spa time.

For variety, the hotel lists other 18-hole courses such as Petersberg, Dolomiti Golf Sarnonico and the Passeier valley course, plus several nine-holers, all between 30 and 60 minutes away by car.

Towers, art and bird-named rooms at Hotel Turm in Völs

The hotel spreads across three houses and several towers in the centre of Völs: the old 13th-century tower, the Kraiterhaus with its round tower, the new Eulenturm and the Wagenhaus. The Turmstube is more than 800 years old. Karl Pramstrahler, father of the current owner, was a collector and left the hotel some 2,000 works, oils, watercolours and lithographs by artists including Joseph Beuys, Oskar Kokoschka, Otto Dix, Paul Klee and Giorgio de Chirico.

Every room and suite is named after a bird, from the Adlernest to the Eulensuite. Two suites sit at the Grottnerhof, the family's wine estate 5 km from Völs. The hotel has an underground garage, its entrance 50 metres past the roundabout into the village centre.

The spa at Hotel Turm: black pool, salt grotto and hay bath

The black pool, heated to 32 °C, lets you swim from inside to out with the Schlern in front of you. There are four saunas, one of them a panorama sauna facing the mountain, a salt grotto cut into the rock with floating loungers, and a 9-metre climbing wall set on the natural rock the building stands on.

The signature treatment is the Völs hay bath, a local remedy formalised in the early 20th century by the physician Josef Clara. The hay comes from the hotel's own alpine pasture on the Seiser Alm, above 1,800 metres, where up to some 70 species of grasses and flowers grow on a single square metre.

Food and wine at the Turm

Francesco Coppola leads the kitchen. The hotel cites two red Gault&Millau toques and three spoons in the Aral Schlemmer Atlas, along with listings in the Michelin Guide and Gambero Rosso. Half-board guests choose each evening between the romantic menu and the '1001 Calories' menu, or order à la carte.

The house wines come from the Grottnerhof: four whites and a red, named in Latin after birds, such as Pica, Bubo and Corax. On Saturday nights a candlelit buffet of strudel, cheese and desserts is laid out in the wine cellar cut into the rock.

Did you know? Hotel Turm

  • A hang-gliding champion in the kitchen: owner and former head chef Stephan Pramstrahler has been Italian hang-gliding champion and long held the distance record.
  • A life with birds: as a boy he kept an eagle owl called Olga, later a raven, Rocky, and a falcon, Hermine. Hence the names of the rooms, terraces and wines.
  • Two Picassos belong to the family; one hangs in the bar named after the medieval poet Oswald von Wolkenstein.
  • Arabian horses are the owners' other passion, and purebred Arabians are part of Gallaria, a former family estate farm turned art gallery and restaurant.
  • Wine culture award: in 2014 the hotel won the South Tyrol prize given since 2004 to venues that champion the province's wine.
