Rangefinders and GPS on holiday: do you really need one? Rules and alternatives

4 min read

Under the Rules of Golf, a rangefinder is permitted by default: only a local rule set by the committee can ban it. In Italy, some clubs allow it even in competitions, while others put GPS directly on the golf car.

Anyone arriving at a course they do not know plays by eye, and by eye the yardages go wrong more often. That is why the rangefinder, or GPS, is among the most debated items in a golfer's luggage. Before packing one, it is worth knowing three things: what the Rules allow, what the clubs say and what alternatives the course offers, starting with the golf car.

What Rule 4.3 of the R&A says

According to Rule 4.3a of the Rules of Golf, obtaining information on distance or direction, for example with a measuring device or a compass, is permitted. The committee of a tournament may, however, restrict it with a local rule.

Certain uses of equipment remain prohibited, because they would remove or artificially reduce an essential skill of the game. The text expressly mentions measuring elevation change, interpreting distance or direction data to work out, for example, the line of play or the recommended club based on the position of the ball, and measuring wind speed. The penalty for a first breach is the general penalty; for a second, disqualification.

In practice: a rangefinder that measures distance only is within the rules; one that calculates the club or the elevation change is not, unless the committee has decided otherwise with a local rule. Before a competition, ask at the club office.

What Italian clubs say

Some clubs state their own rules. At the Golf Club Quellenhof Passeier, the local rules allow distance-measuring devices and GPS even in competitions. Distance-measuring devices and GPS are also allowed at the Golf Club Passeier.Meran, where the distance markers on the course show 100, 150 and 200 metres.

Many clubs do not publish a rule on rangefinders: in these cases it is best to ask at the club office, especially for competitions.

GPS on the golf car: an alternative, and its cost

Many courses put GPS on the golf car instead, and it is worth knowing this before spending money on a device:

Club GPS on the golf car Stated price
Pevero Golf Club Buggy with GPS 60 euros for 18 holes (2026)
Golf Club Castelconturbia Golf car with GPS, water and snacks included 60 euros for 18 holes (2026)
Golf Club Paradiso del Garda Golf car with GPS 40 euros for 18 holes (35 without GPS), 25 for nine (20 without)
Golf Club Bologna 25 golf carts with GPS on a 12-inch screen Price to be requested from the club

Where a price is stated, the GPS on the golf car therefore costs 5 euros more at Paradiso del Garda, while at Pevero and Castelconturbia the 60-euro rate is that of the golf car with GPS. At Pevero, driving the buggy requires being 18 and holding a driving licence.

A rangefinder in the suitcase: weight and practicalities

A rangefinder weighs little, but the golf bag does not: on easyJet the limit for golf clubs is 20 kg, according to the airline. Also consider whether you really need one: on a course you do not know, with distance markers at 100, 150 and 200 metres as at Passeier.Meran, plenty of information comes from the course itself. At clubs with a GPS-equipped golf car, a personal device may prove unnecessary.

What to do in practice

  1. Check the local rule of the club or tournament before you leave.
  2. Check what your device does: if it measures elevation change or wind, or recommends a club, it does not comply with Rule 4.3a, unless a local rule allows it.
  3. Consider the golf car with GPS as an alternative, at least at the clubs that offer one.
  4. Ask at the club office when the club does not publish the rule.
