A detox week with golf: what the word really means and where to do it

5 min read

“The whole idea of detox is nonsense,” says the British Dietetic Association; yet in Franciacorta a relais offers programmes of three to seven days with more than thirty professionals, and a few kilometres away there is a 27-hole course. What these stays really are, and how they pair with golf.

A week in a hotel with a golf course and a “detox” programme is a proposal that recurs in brochures: you play in the morning, have treatments in the afternoon and eat lightly in the evening. Before saying where to do it, a caveat: the word “detox” has no medical meaning, and British dietitians are highly sceptical. Before booking, it is worth knowing what hotels really offer, what dietitians say and which questions to ask.

What the dietitians say

The British Dietetic Association (BDA), in its fact sheet on detox diets, states bluntly that “the whole idea of detox is nonsense” and that many of the promoters’ claims “are exaggerated and not based on solid scientific evidence”. The body, it points out, has its own purification systems: the liver and kidneys continually filter, break down and eliminate waste substances. Among the risks of fasting and drastic diets, the BDA lists fatigue, dizziness, irritability and difficulty concentrating; rapid weight loss is, it says, largely water and glycogen, not fat. The alternative it recommends is a balanced diet, with at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, physical activity, adequate sleep, no smoking and no excess alcohol.

Anyone planning a golf and wellness holiday should know that behind the word “detox” there is often a package of services (light cuisine, treatments, exercise, rest), not a scientifically proven purification. It can be a lovely week: it is another matter to say that it “detoxifies”.

Golf and multi-day programmes: what to ask

If the programme involves a very restricted diet, put one simple question to the hotel’s doctor: can I play 18 holes, and at what pace? There is no answer that suits everyone. Also ask:

  • Who runs the programme? Doctors, dietitians, therapists: look for a team, not just a brochure.
  • What is eaten, and in what quantities? A programme can be more or less restrictive.
  • Can you step out of the programme to play? Some courses of treatment have fixed schedules and menus.
  • Who is it not recommended for? A good establishment says so in advance.

Where to do it: five hotels with golf and a medical spa

L’Albereta, Franciacorta

L’Albereta in Erbusco hosts, according to the hotel, the only Italian home of the Chenot Method, chosen by Henri Chenot: the Chenot Espace covers 2,000 m² on two levels, with programmes of 3 to 7 days and a team of more than thirty professionals, doctors and therapists among them. Guests following the programme eat at the Chenot Restaurant, reserved for those in treatment, and the hotel describes the programme as accompanied by the Chenot Diet. For those staying a single day there is the Detox Day Spa formula, with treatments and lunch. The hotel is among the partners of the Franciacorta Golf Club, 27 holes designed by Pete Dye and Marco Croze, and states that nine courses lie within 100 kilometres.

Terme di Saturnia, Maremma

Terme di Saturnia pairs its face and body treatments with a Medical SPA and naturopathy programmes; the spring is at 37.5 °C. The 18-hole course is inside the resort, and the Golf Inclusive package, with a minimum of two nights, includes one green fee per day for each player.

Argentario Golf & Wellness Resort

At the Argentario, the Espace Wellness Center (2,700 m²) has a MediSpa area devoted to nutrition and naturopathy, and the treatments use lavender from the resort’s fields and organic olive oil from the Maremma. The course, 18 holes, par 71, is in the resort; in June 2025 it hosted the 82nd Italian Open.

Quellenhof Passeier, Val Passiria

The Quellenhof has a Medical Center that, according to the hotel, combines biohacking with regeneration treatments: it is worth asking what the programmes consist of. The Passeier.Meran is five minutes away by car.

Grand Hotel Alassio

The Thalassio Medical Spa at the Grand Hotel Alassio is led by a medical director; it is open from March to January. It is not a “detox” programme, but it is an example of an establishment with declared medical responsibility: something to look for, wherever you go.

A possible week (and how not to expect too much)

One possible arrangement is to alternate days of golf with days of treatments only, leaving it to the hotel’s doctor to decide how much walking is appropriate. If the programme is light (healthy cuisine, spa, walks), golf fits in without problems; if it is restrictive, ask first. If you are not sure, choose a short formula: a single day (such as the Detox Day Spa at L’Albereta) before committing to seven.

Frequently asked questions

Does detox work?+

The British Dietetic Association says that many of the promoters’ claims are not based on solid scientific evidence and that the body already has its own purification systems. For health matters, ask a doctor.

Can you play golf during a detox programme?+

It depends on the programme: if it involves a very restricted diet, the answer rests with the hotel’s doctor.

Where can you do a multi-day programme near a golf course?+

L’Albereta (Franciacorta, 3 to 7-day Chenot Method programmes), Terme di Saturnia (Medical SPA and naturopathy), Argentario (MediSpa) and Quellenhof Passeier (Medical Center).

How long does a programme last?+

At L’Albereta, from 3 to 7 days, in addition to the one-day formula (Detox Day Spa). For the other hotels, ask the establishment.

Is a medical check-up needed first?+

For programmes with a medical component, ask the establishment: it is a question to put before booking.

Do you lose weight?+

The BDA says that rapid loss is largely water and glycogen, and that the weight tends to come back. A week’s stay is not a proven method of losing weight.
