Pevero, Robert Trent Jones's course on the Costa Smeralda

6 min read

The 16th hole at Pevero is a tribute to James Bond. The club ties it to 1962, the year the saga debuted on screen and, in its telling, the year the Costa Smeralda began.

Visitors to Pevero Golf Club find a course designed in 1972 by Robert Trent Jones in an unforgiving landscape: weathered granite, natural ponds, juniper and myrtle, and above it all the mistral. The club occupies 60 hectares of the Costa Smeralda, between Pevero Bay and Cala di Volpe, and has a hole, the 16th, dedicated to James Bond.

The course: 6,107 metres of wind and rock

Pevero has 18 holes, par 72, 6,107 metres. The design is by Robert Trent Jones, who according to the club planned more than 500 courses in 34 countries. The landscape is swept by wind, with weathered rocks and natural ponds.

The difficulty, the club says, comes from the mistral: north-westerly winds make every shot uncertain. From the 4th hole you can see the snow-capped peaks of Corsica and the island of Caprera. The 16th hole is a tribute to James Bond, in memory of 1962: the year the saga debuted in cinemas and, for the club, the year the Costa Smeralda began.

The course record, according to the club, is 66 strokes, set by the amateur John Saxon Mills in 1977. According to the club, Golf Magazine has ranked it among the 50 best courses in the world.

The 1978 Italian Open: the highest winning score

Pevero's most famous event is the 1978 Italian Open. South African Dale Hayes beat Englishman Tommy Horton with 293 strokes, five over par: according to the club it is still the highest winning score on the European circuit. The calendar also lists the Italian International Amateurs and the 1981 International Ladies Championship, and the PGA of Europe Individual Championship in 1999, 2001 and 2002.

The club's project was overseen by Robert O'Donnell, with the clubhouse designed by Riccardo Bonicatti.

Playing Pevero as a guest: rules, hours and 2026 prices

Access is reserved for players with a card from a recognised federation and a maximum handicap of 54. The course is open every day from 8 am to 7.30 pm. The 2026 price list divides the year into four seasons:

2026 period 18-hole green fee
From January to 26 April and from 26 October to December €120
From 27 April to 21 June and from 14 September to 25 October €140
From 22 June to 19 July and from 17 August to 13 September €160
From 20 July to 16 August €180

Nine holes cost €80 to €110; juniors born after 1 January 2008 pay half. The buggy with GPS costs €60 for 18 holes, the electric trolley €30, while the manual trolley is free; premium clubs can be rented for €65-70.

A few rules deserve attention. Each player must have their own bag, children under 6 are not allowed on the course, and driving a buggy requires being 18 and holding a licence. The dress code bans jeans and T-shirts: players wear tailored Bermuda shorts and collared polo shirts. Cancellations with less than 48 hours' notice cost 100%.

The club: practice range, academy and clubhouse

The practice range has 20 outdoor bays and 5 covered ones with Toptracer, plus putting, pitching and a bunker area. The clubhouse offers a restaurant with a view over the course and a panoramic terrace with a pool. The club also has the Pevero Golf Academy, with courses for teenagers and children too.

Where to stay: three hotels on the Costa Smeralda

Three major hotels on the Costa Smeralda send their golfing guests right here.

  • Hotel Cala di Volpe: 121 rooms with private terrace. Pevero sells guests an Unlimited Golf package with unlimited play, breakfast, an 18-hole round for two and discounted lessons; the published terms excluded high summer (for 2025, 23 June to 14 September). In the 1977 film "The Spy Who Loved Me", Bond stays here.
  • Hotel Pitrizza: 49 rooms and 16 villas, designed by Luigi Vietti in 1963, 5 km from Porto Cervo and 35 km from Olbia.
  • Romazzino, a Belmond Hotel: 94 rooms and suites, opened in 1965 by Aga Khan IV, with private golf lessons at Pevero as an experience.

The price of the Cala di Volpe package is not published: it is booked by phone with the hotel.
