One of the best-known chairs in Italian design bears the name of this club: Vico Magistretti came up with the idea of the “Carimate”, later produced by Cassina, from the clubhouse restaurant he was designing here. Below, since 1962, an 18-hole course is played in the 60 hectares of the Carimate Castle park, twenty minutes from Como.

The Golf Club Carimate course: 18 holes among the trees of the park

The layout is the work of the Roman engineer Piero Mancinelli, who adapted it to the natural slopes of the terrain and to the residential district that grew up together with the club. It measures 6,021 metres for a par 71, with four par 3s, three par 5s and a sequence of doglegs, raised greens and tree-lined fairways, with out of bounds bordering many holes.

Every hole bears the name of a tree: Linden, English Oak, Chestnut. The 11th, the Atlas Cedar, is the longest, 535 metres from the men's tees, with a large cedar planted in the middle of play. The 16th, the American Maple, is for the club the most technical hole: a left dogleg between two rows of trees, defended by many bunkers. Water appears rarely, like the small lake on the right of the 17th; the greens range from three-tiered ones to shallow ones.

The club is open all year and closes only on Mondays that are not public holidays. The green fee list, published on the website, provides separate rates for weekdays and weekends and public holidays, for Federgolf cardholders, for youngsters and for foreign players, as well as for nine holes.

You can hire a golf cart and an electric trolley, while the driving range has a separate rate. For tee times and information the secretary's office answers on 031 790226.

The club: Magistretti's clubhouse and the history of the Castle

The story begins in 1955, when Baroness Arnaboldi Cazzaniga sold the family estate and castle to the Società Generale Immobiliare of Rome. The result was a project with about 400 villas and a golf course, opened in 1962.

For the clubhouse Magistretti and Veneziani chose a modernist language, far from the English cottage. Today it houses the restaurant, entrusted to Green Food and chef Marzio, with a cuisine ranging from Lombard tradition to Mediterranean. The facilities are completed by a putting green, pitching green, pro shop, bar, swimming pool and tennis club.

  • A cedar in the middle of the fairway. At the 11th, the longest hole, a large cedar stands in the middle of play.
