The course record at Castelconturbia is 66, and it carries two signatures: José María Olazábal's and Costantino Rocca's. The layout is a 27-hole Robert Trent Jones Sr. design with Monte Rosa on the horizon.
Castelconturbia has a record you don't often see: 66 strokes, shared by two champions, José María Olazábal and Costantino Rocca. It is the mark of a course that, in Piedmont, between Novara and Lake Maggiore, has a longer history than its name suggests. Here you will find the design of Robert Trent Jones Sr., the three nines, the 2026 green fees and the small hotel overlooking the closing holes.
From the 1898 Couturbier to Trent Jones
The story begins with Count Gaspar Voli, a seasoned traveller in Scotland, who drew his neighbour Count Avogadro di Collobiano into a project for nine holes (par 36) on the estate. In 1898, according to the club, the course, known as the Couturbier, was the only one in Piedmont and one of only two in Italy. It was played by the Savoy family during fox hunts and stayed in use until 1963, when it became private and was abandoned.
The club was reborn in 1984 as Golf Club Castelconturbia, affiliated with the Federation: the driving range opened in 1986 and by September 1987 all 27 holes were open. The course stands next to the seventeenth-century castle of the Counts of Conturbia.
The course: three nines among oaks, lakes and Monte Rosa
The 27 holes are by Robert Trent Jones Sr., who designed the modern course by absorbing and extending the area of the old nine holes. The club describes it as laid out among centuries-old trees, streams and small lakes, with gentle undulations in the ground, in unspoilt countryside and with the Monte Rosa massif as a backdrop. The course covers more than one million square metres.
You play three nines, all par 36, which according to Piemonte Italia measure as follows:
| Nine | Par | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | 36 | 3,085 m |
| Blue | 36 | 3,145 m |
| Red | 36 | 3,266 m |
The website publishes a hole-by-hole map but no text scorecard, which is why we do not describe individual holes.
Tournaments and records
The course hosted the Italian Open in 1991 and 1998 and, in 2020, a Challenge Tour event. The club also notes that since 1987 it has won, every year, the awards recognising Italy's best courses, and that in 2003 it was named number one.
Playing Castelconturbia as a guest
The club publishes 2026 rates for guests, with tee times bookable online. High season runs from 1 April to 15 July and from 1 September to 31 October.
| 2026 green fee | Low season | High season |
|---|---|---|
| 18 holes, weekdays | €91 | €113 |
| 18 holes, weekends | €113 | €140 |
| 9 holes, weekdays | €57 | €70 |

The All Day option costs 20 per cent more than the 18-hole rate. A golf buggy with GPS costs €60 for 18 holes (water and snacks included), an electric trolley €25, a pull trolley €10, and a set of clubs for hire €55. Anyone who cancels at least 5 days before the tee time is refunded in full; between four and two days the refund is 50 per cent; from the day before there is no refund. Golf shoes are required, and the dress code rules out tank tops, faded jeans, leggings and tracksuits.
Golf Hotel, restaurant and practice area
Next to the course is the Golf Hotel, with 21 rooms overlooking the inner garden. From the restaurant, a covered terrace looks onto the closing holes of the three courses. In summer there is an outdoor swimming pool, open to members and hotel guests.
The driving range has Trackman technology, 20 open and 10 covered bays; the short-game area exceeds 5,000 square metres. The pro shop sells brands such as Ralph Lauren, Chervò, Callaway and Titleist.
More golf nearby and where to sleep on the lake
A weekend in this area can combine several courses. Nearby Bogogno Golf Resort has 36 holes by Robert Von Hagge dating from 1997: the Conte, links-style, and the Bonora, parkland. On the lake shore, the Golf des Iles Borromées is an 18-hole par 72 at about 600 metres above sea level in the AltoVergante, and the Golf Club Alpino di Stresa on the Mottarone presents itself as the cradle of the Italian Open.
To stay in Stresa, the hotel Villa e Palazzo Aminta lists nine partner clubs and mentions Castelconturbia among the longest courses within reach if you widen the radius, with its 18 + 9 holes. The concierge takes care of booking green fees; the terms of the partnership are not published and must be requested at the time of booking.
