Flying with a golf bag: the airline rules

4 min read

On easyJet a golf bag counts as a «small» item of sports equipment and cannot exceed 20 kilograms, and adding it at the airport costs more than adding it online. Before you pack, it helps to know what you pay, where and how to avoid it.

Airlines treat a golf bag as sports equipment, not as ordinary hold luggage: it has its own fee, a weight limit and, almost always, must be added to the booking. The rules change often and each carrier publishes them in its own way. Before you leave, your airline's sports equipment page is essential reading.

The short answer

  • Book the bag together with the flight. On easyJet, doing so online or in the app costs less than doing it at the airport.
  • Watch the weight: on easyJet the limit is 20 kg. With other airlines, check the maximum weight and dimensions on the sports equipment page.
  • Don't count on the hold bag allowance: on easyJet the weight of the golf bag is not added to that of the hold bag you have purchased.
  • Alternative: many clubs rent clubs, and some hotels arrange the rental.

easyJet: weight, booking and surcharge

According to the airline's official page, golf clubs fall into the «small» category, with a maximum of 20 kg. Every adult, child or infant with their own seat can add one item of sports equipment to the booking, online or in the app, at the time of booking, in Manage Bookings or at online check-in; doing it at the airport or through customer service costs a little more. The weight of the equipment is not added to that of the purchased hold bag, and once booked it is non-refundable. For large equipment there is a cap of six items per online booking. The exact amount is on the airline's «fees and charges» page, and varies by route.

Other airlines: what to check

Ryanair, ITA Airways, Lufthansa, British Airways and the other carriers each have their own conditions, and they change often. Before booking, check five points on your airline's sports equipment page:

  • Price per leg, and whether it differs between online booking and the airport.
  • Maximum weight and, where stated, the bag's total dimensions.
  • What it may contain: some airlines allow balls and shoes in the bag as well as the clubs; others treat anything extra as ordinary luggage.
  • Exemptions linked to loyalty programme status or travel class: with some carriers the bag travels free for top-tier customers.
  • Excess weight: how much you pay per kilo if the bag exceeds the limit.

Protecting the bag in flight

The bag travels in the hold with the rest of the luggage. A rigid or padded travel cover reduces the risk of damage to the wood heads; remember, though, that the weight of the cover counts towards the airline's limit. Keep the receipt for the surcharge: in case of delay or damage it is the document you will be asked for.

The alternative: renting clubs on site

Not every course publishes its price, but some do. In 2026 Circolo Golf Is Molas rents a set of clubs for 50 euros for 18 holes; San Domenico Golf, for 50 euros; Tanka Golf, for 40 euros for 18 holes and 25 for nine; Golf des Iles Borromées, for 25 euros. At Pevero Golf Club premium clubs cost 65-70 euros. Some hotels help too: the Hotel Excelsior on the Lido, for example, takes care of equipment rental through Guest Relations, and the Quellenhof Luxury Resort Lazise and Villa d'Este offer rental among their golf services.

The sum is simple: for a week with four or five rounds, the return air surcharge should be compared with four or five rentals. For a weekend with one or two rounds, renting often also spares you the problem of getting the bag from the airport to the course.
