The Golf Club Ca' Amata course: 18 holes with ponds and canals

The course is an 18-hole par 71: the front nine is par 36 and the back nine par 35. It stretches over 75 hectares in the park of Villa Ca' Amata, which the club describes as one of the most prestigious examples of 18th-century Venetian architecture. The design is that of a romantic park: eleven of the eighteen holes have a system of small lakes and canals, with bridges and waterfalls.

The scorecard published by the club is in yards: from the men's tees the front nine measures 2,881 yards and the back nine 2,795, 5,676 yards in all, about 5,190 metres. It is therefore not a long course, which the club describes as “a severe test even for experienced players”, with long par 4s, large greens on some holes and smaller, more technical greens, with slopes, on others.

There are three par 5s: the 1st (458 yards), the 7th (468) and the 10th (495). There are four par 3s: the 3rd (145), the 6th (127), the 13th (139) and the 16th (170). The hardest hole by handicap is the 4th, a 403-yard par 4, followed by the 18th (387) and the 2nd (372).

The main course is joined by a nine-hole executive. The website gives neither the architect nor the opening year.

The club: villa, golf school and youth activities

Villa Ca' Amata can be visited by appointment. Inside the grounds there is a practice area with covered bays, a putting green, a chipping green and an approach green.

The golf school has three professionals: Kevin Smillie, a Scottish PGA professional since 1996, Paolo Zanesco, an Italian PGA professional, and Gabriele Heinrich, who wore the national team shirt from 2006 to 2010. A half-hour lesson costs 30 euros for adults and 20 for juniors; a package of twelve lessons 300 and 200 euros. Clinics in Italy and abroad and golf trips to Scotland are offered.

The club runs a competitive programme for juniors and seniors, a programme for baby golfers and charging points for electric cars.
