Before the holes there was a vineyard, and before that a commandery of the Knights of Santo Stefano, founded in 1180. It was the painter and sculptor Anselmo Asioli, back from a stay at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic, who turned the farmstead's vines into a golf course, opened in 1996.

The Santo Stefano Golf course: 9 holes between water and out of bounds
The course is a nine-hole par 64, regulation type A, which takes about two hours to play. Asioli designed it with a technical bent: the layout is narrow, many holes are affected by water hazards and out of bounds, and a few small hills enliven the flat terrain. The club offers it both as a training ground for beginners, where you can use every club from the tee and from the ground, and as a competition layout for more experienced players.
The practice ground has 8 covered bays and 4 in the open, a grass tee and a bay dedicated to the driver; there are also a pitching green, an approach bunker and a two-level putting green. The whole area can be floodlit.
Playing at Santo Stefano Golf as a guest
The club is open all year. Under the 2026 rates the daily green fee costs 25 euros on weekdays and 30 at weekends and on public holidays, the same amount for 9 or 18 holes; entry to the practice ground alone costs 10 euros and the golf cart 25. Those entering an 18-hole competition pay 45 euros, green fee included.
You can hire all your equipment and take lessons with a PGA Italia professional, for juniors and adults. Anyone who has never played can ask at the office for the Golf Pop course.
The estate: history, hotel and restaurant
The farmstead has eight centuries of history: it began in 1180 as a commandery of the Order of the Knights of Santo Stefano, became a convent in 1470 and an Emilian country estate from the nineteenth century. In the 1970s Asioli opened the “Arte Europa” gallery there and began its restoration. From 1 January 2024, after 27 years of management by the Asioli family, the sporting side passed to a group of eight golfing friends, who founded Santo Stefano Golf & Country Club.
Around the course lies the whole estate: a 10-room hotel, a meeting space in the historic barn, a café open from morning to evening, the pizzeria restaurant open to everyone and a swimming pool with a sun terrace for the summer.
Curiosities about Santo Stefano Golf
- A course born on holiday. The idea came to Asioli in the early 1990s, after a stay at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic.
- From vine to green. The course occupies the land that was the farmstead’s vineyard.
- “La Catedral”. The club also has an 18-hole footgolf course, par 69, with water on more than three quarters of the layout: players nicknamed it that, and in its first year it already hosted official tournaments of the Italian Footgolf Federation.
- A club among friends. Since 2024 it has been run by a group of eight enthusiasts.
