Facts checked on 18/10/2026

The first practice ground failed because the land was so steep that the balls rolled back by themselves. The group of friends who wanted to play golf in the Gavi hills then found an abandoned farmhouse, Cascina Spinola, and on 1 May 1990 hit the first ball there: from that meadow 27 holes were born.

The courses at Golf Colline del Gavi: Lago, Castello and Old Course

The 27 holes spread over 110 hectares of hills, small lakes and streams. The club warns that the elevation changes call for good legs, and that trees and water make every hole different from the next.

Lago is a nine with par 37 and about 3,080 metres from the standard men's tees, with three par 5s; the hardest hole is the 6th, a 360-metre par 4. Castello has two par 5s and its most demanding hole by stroke index is the 1st, a 390-metre par 4. The championship 18 were built to the design of Luigi Rota Caremoli: the first ten holes opened in the mid-1990s, the last eight in September 1998.

The Old Course, the red course, is the most recent but stands where it all began, on the ground where the founding friends had taken their first steps some thirty years earlier. It is a short par 33, with three par 3s, but the club describes it as full of hazards.

Playing at Golf Colline del Gavi as a guest

The club's current price list asks €50 for 18 holes on weekdays and €80 at weekends and holidays; nine holes cost €30 or €45, a full day on the 27 holes €70 or €100. From April to October, on Tuesdays, FIG members pay €40 for the championship course. The practice ground costs €10.

Until 1 March 2026 the course was closed on Tuesdays that were not public holidays; since then the club lists the course as always open. A buggy costs €50 for 18 holes and €65 for the day; an electric trolley €20, a set of rental clubs €20.

The club: Cascina Spinola, La Locanda and the guesthouse

The La Locanda restaurant, open to non-players too, works with local produce under chef Andrea Bisio: game, mushrooms and truffles in season, a golfer's menu for the break between holes and a list of native white wines and Piedmontese reds. It is closed on Tuesdays.

Those who wish to stay will find the guesthouse, built a few years ago: 11 rooms, including a suite with a terrace. The Golf Academy works with the TrackMan system and with the instructors Luca Torchio and Alessandro Pittaluga.

Curiosities about Golf Colline del Gavi

  • Balls that came back. The first practice ground built by the founders was on land so steep that the balls rolled back by themselves.
  • Born in a farmhouse. The club came to life at Cascina Spinola, then abandoned, as the “Riasco practice ground”.
  • Greens on a mound. The first three executive holes of 1991 had raised greens, made by levelling a small mound.
  • The new one is the oldest. The Old Course, the last nine to open, stands where the club was born.
