The 16th hole at Circolo Golf degli Ulivi began life as a par 4 and is now a 228-metre par 3 with a slope on the right where balls become unplayable. It is one of the details of a short course, 5,203 metres par 69, but anything but forgiving, which takes its name in Sanremo from the olive trees that dot it and which tradition dates back to 1932.

The Circolo Golf degli Ulivi course: 18 holes among the olive trees of Sanremo
The club presents the course as 18 holes, par 69, 5,203 metres. The handicap table reveals an unusual structure: eleven par 4s, five par 3s (holes 2, 9, 11, 14 and 16) and only two par 5s, the 15th and the 18th. The design is attributed to Peter Gannon; the current layout dates, according to the blog of the Royal Hotel Sanremo, from 1972. The club describes it as a not long course, made of technical and delicate holes rather than power.
The pages devoted to the individual holes show where shots are lost. The 2nd, a 180-metre par 3, has out of bounds on the left and is judged “particularly demanding and dangerous”. The 4th, a 345-metre par 4, demands precision with a narrow fairway; the 6th, a 340-metre par 4, opens with a slight dogleg to the left. The 8th, a 385-metre par 4, is the course's first handicap hole: left dogleg, a tee shot to be carried to the right and a green defended by bunkers.
The club awards the palm for the hardest hole to the 14th, a 210-metre par 3 with olive trees on both sides, from which recovery is complicated. On the 16th, a 228-metre par 3, you must avoid the slope on the right; originally it was a par 4. The round closes with the 18th, a 440-metre par 5 with a right dogleg, considered relatively easy, with vineyards and flower greenhouses on the right-hand side.

The 2026 price list sets the 18-hole green fee at 65 euros on weekdays and 80 euros on weekends and public holidays and their eves. For under-18s the fees are 30 and 40 euros; partner hotels have a rate of 55 euros on weekdays and 65 at the weekend. A promotion brings the green fee down to 50 euros on every non-holiday Thursday, with the option of adding lunch (a dish of your choice and half a bottle of mineral water) for 10 euros.
Paid services include the range at 8 euros and the trolley at 5 euros; entry to a one-day competition costs 20 euros, to a two-day one 30. The website does not state the handicap required, the weekly closing day or the dress code: to book you can call 0184 557093 or write to [email protected].
Watch the calendar: the club is closed from 29 September to 9 October 2026 for aeration and overseeding work, and reopens on 10 October.
The club: history, academy and the Tee Shot restaurant
The name comes, the club explains, from the abundance of olive trees on the course. According to the blog of the Royal Hotel Sanremo, the adventure began with a demonstration on Tuesday 1 December 1931, given by two English gentlemen and two golf teachers, on a slope among olive trees and mimosas; the opening is dated 1932. Again according to the hotel, the course hosted the Italian Open in the 1930s and 1940s, the Masters of the 1980s, the European Senior Tour in 2004 and the PGA Italian Championship from 2005 to 2007, and received a federal environmental award in 2016.
The Sanremo Golf Academy has as its technical director Donato Di Ponziano, who led the National Golf School from 1983 to 2012, supported by Nicola Carrera, Alessandra Ammirati, Cristian Lanza and Federico Maccario. For swing analysis the school uses a Full Swing simulator.
The Tee Shot restaurant, run by the Ad Hoc brand with chef Matteo Riccitelli, is open every day for lunch and on Friday and Saturday for dinner too; it is closed on Tuesday. The club is among those partnered with the Royal Hotel Sanremo.
