The Circolo Golf Napoli course: 9 holes in Carney Park
Carney Park is a US military recreation facility in the extinct Campiglione volcano, in the Campi Flegrei: a 93-acre site about 23 kilometres west of Naples, named after Admiral Robert B. Carney, who was Chief of Naval Operations during the Eisenhower administration. Circolo Golf Napoli is hosted here by the US Navy.
The Carney Park Golf Course is described by the club as unique in the world, a green area of 40 hectares. It has 9 holes with double tee boxes: using the different tees, an 18-hole round is created, par 70, of 5,488 metres, at 10 metres above sea level. The website presents it as suitable for good players as well as beginners and juniors.
The layout was updated by Richard Knapp, a PGA manager, and by Eugenio Strazzullo, a long-standing player of the club, with the complicity of Raffaele Grande. The website shows distances, par and handicap for every hole.
Playing Circolo Golf Napoli: members only
The course is not open to the public: access is granted exclusively to US military personnel and to members of Golf Napoli. For this reason there are no guest green fees, and the website does not publish rates, opening hours or a closing day; for information on admission, write to [email protected] or call 081 526 4296.
To reach the course by car, take the Tangenziale and exit at via Campana, then follow the signs for Carney Park; the address is via Campiglione 11, in Pozzuoli. The calendar of competitions can be consulted on Gesgolf.
The club: from the pioneering generals of 1978 to today
It all began in May 1978, when the AFSOUTH high command authorised a small group of generals to enter Carney Park: Corrado Ceccacci, Pasquale Grauso and Aldo Maggia, the three pioneers who opened the door to the future club. Golf Napoli, founded in 1982, began its sporting activity here. The first president was Ian Corradini; since 2021 the club has been led by Nicola Pizzi.
The technical side is entrusted to the instructor Alessandro Ferragina, a professional since 2004 and a teacher since 2009, with certifications as a Titleist Performance Institute, Flightscope, K-Vest and Trackman instructor. The club describes the area, between Capo Miseno and Punta Campanella, as a land where it rains less than elsewhere, especially in winter, with a mild climate and little wind.
